New Technology Aids Deputy Sheriff In Making Arrest

On March 21, 2007 at approximately 9:00 p.m., Deputy Sheriff Robert Reeve, a five-year veteran of the S.C. Sheriff's Office, with over 100 arrests, was utilizing the new license plate reader, commonly known as LPR, when he received a signal alert. The LPR advised the Deputy that a vehicle with a suspended registration had just passed by the unit. Deputy Reeve was able to stop the 2001 Chevy northbound on Route 24, across from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, and approach the operator. Deputy Sheriff Reeve asked the operator for her driver's license and registration when Ms. Taddeo, age 38, of Port Jefferson Station, stated that, " she did not have a New York license but had a Florida permit over 20 years ago." Ms. Taddeo then wrote down her alleged name and date of birth and handed it to the Deputy Sheriff. A computer check revealed that the woman had no license in New York under the given name of Marie Taddeo.

Deputy Reeve then advised Ms. Taddeo of the consequences for committing the crime of False Impersonation, to which Ms. Taddeo responded that it was her name, and that she did not have a license. Deputy Sheriff Reeve was able to ascertain that Ms. Taddeo had in fact given a false name and date of birth, and in reality, Ms. Dawn Taddeo had a suspended New York license, which had over 47 active suspensions. Ms. Taddeo was then arrested on Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 1st Degree, a felony, False Impersonation, a misdemeanor, and was issued a vehicle and traffic ticket for Suspended Registration, a misdemeanor. Ms. Taddeo, who has an arrest record dating back to 1992, with arrests for Burglary, Assault, and Assault with Intent to Cause Physical Injury, also had two convictions for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 1st Degree.

Ms. Taddeo was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court and released on $100 bail with a return date to court on May 2nd.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stated, "The License Plate Reader is an effective piece of equipment which increases officer safety and gives the officer a better advantage."
